Oozing with hot, melty cheese, pupusas are a Salvadoran comfort food that resemble thick, stuffed tortillas. Hearty masa encases a cheesy filling, which can also include pork and refried beans, which is flattened into a disc and heated to perfection. In lieu of ordering a pupusa from a restaurant or making them fresh yourself, pupusas can be purchased frozen. Simply heat frozen pupusas on a griddle or in a skillet and you'll be chowing down on a cultural comfort food in minutes.

Step 1

Bring a skillet on the stove top or a griddle to medium heat. Sprinkle a few drops of oil onto the heated surface.

Step 2

Place the pupusa in the skillet or on the griddle once the oil shimmers with heat. Cook the pupusa over medium heat for approximately 8 to 9 minutes, flipping halfway through with a spatula, until both sides are golden brown and crispy.

Step 3

Add additional oil or flip the pupusa more frequently while cooking to achieve the desired color and crispness on both sides. Remove the pupusa from the skillet and serve with salsa and a spicy cabbage slaw.


If desired, you can give your frozen pupusa a quick defrost in the microwave to lessen cooking time.
