An above-ground of pool is an inexpensive way to enjoy a swimming pool at home. However, if the ground was not leveled correctly during the initial setup, the process must be redone correctly. Otherwise, the leaning may cause the pool pump not to function correctly and lead to the pool collapsing on the weak side.

Step 1

Drain your above-ground pool using the plug at the bottom of the pool. Move the pool away from the area, allowing enough space to work and level the ground.

Step 2

Attach the 2-by-4 boards together using deck screws. Overlap the ends of the boards about 3 inches to keep them straight. Make the entire length of the boards about 2 feet longer than the diameter of your pool base. For instance, if the pool base is 12 feet, make the boards 14 feet.

Step 3

Cover the area where the pool sets with sand. The depth of the sand should be about 2 inches. Use a metal rake to move the sand and get it as level as possible.

Step 4

Drill a hole in the center of the 2-by-4 boards. Lay the boards on the sand so the hole is directly in the middle of the area you are leveling. Drive a 3/8-inch metal rod though the hole to hold the boards in place and allow them to spin.

Step 5

Spin the 2-by-4 boards with the level on top and move the sand from the high side to the low side. This helps distribute the sand evenly. Watch the level and when it shows the entire area is level, stop spinning the boards.

Step 6

Wet the area with a garden hose and allow the sand to settle. Pack the sand with a tamper until you do not see any footsteps when walking. Reset the pool.

Remove any rocks from the area before adding sand. Recheck the ground after wetting and tamping it to ensure it is level.
